I am seeking 2-3 fellow speakers for a panel on the general theme of scientific expeditions and the natural environment for the World Congress on Environmental History in Copenhagen in August 2009. I am proposing to present a paper entitled 'German Scientists on the Russian Steppes: The Russian Academy of Sciences Expeditions of the late 18th century.' My paper will analyze the writings of Gmelin, Guidenstadt and Pallas on the natural history and economic potential of the region.
